Price cuts for 16x DVD Dual DL burners cause domino effect

Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently reduced the retail price for its 16x DVD Dual DL (single-sided double-layer) burners with 4x DL to below NT$2,000 (US$63) and leading local brands including LiteOn have followed suit, causing a domino effect that have CD-RW burners and CD-ROM drives being priced at record lows, according to sources in the retail channel.

Pioneer, Asustek and other brands have also lowered the retail prices for their 16x DVD Dual DL burners with 6x DL from NT$2,600-2,800 (US$82-88) to NT$2,300-2,500 (US$72-78), the sources indicated.

The price cuts were a sign that vendors are looking to clear out inventory before promotions for 16x DVD Dual DL burner models with 8x DL begin, the sources added.

The price cuts have also caused prices for Combo drives, CD-RW burners and CD-ROM drives to drop 5-7%, hitting a record low of NT$800 (US$25) for CD-RW burners and NT$300 (US$9.4) for CD-ROM drives, the sources pointed out.
