DVD burners: First update firmware

Before using a newly-installed DVD burner, update the device’s firmware. That’s the advice of German-based technology magazine ComputerFoto, published in Germany.

DVD burners are popular these days, with manufacturers rushing to market new devices to attract attention.

The result is that some of the devices ship with firmware that has not been thoroughly tested or is not up to compatibility standards with all equipment.

Firmware is the internal software that allows hardware devices to communicate with the rest of the computer.

Typically, a hardware device’s firmware can be updated by downloading a special file from the hardware maker’s web site and following the update instructions provided.

Updating the firmware of DVD burners can also improve compatibility with writable DVD discs. Editors at the magazine recommend that users ensure that DVD burners are matched properly with compatible DVD blanks.

Most manufacturers of DVD burners publish lists of tested DVD discs.
