Dual-layer DVD burners are popular items these days, with prices for the hardware falling while their writing speed skyrockets. Seems like we’ve been on a DVD binge here at the Midwest Test Facility, so why not review a another one, this time from LaCie ? It’s an external FireWire model for Macs or PCs, the LaCie d2 DVD ±RW 16x ($174 street), which proved itself to be unusually fast in our testing. Can’t wait to get your hands on the new high-definition DVDs? Well, prepare to keep waiting, because the fighting between the HD-DVD camp and the Blu-Ray camp continues to rage unabated. The backers of the HD-DVD standard may have an ace up their sleeve, though, and it’s in the form of an approval from media manufacturers that might tip the balance in HD-DVD’s favor, as Taiwanese media factories gave HD-DVD a slight nudge this week by indicating their preference–although they stress that it is only a slight preference. The following is a statement by HD DVD:
“Today’s announcement by 20th Century Fox regarding its support of the Blu-ray Disc format is surprising and misleading in terms of which format provides for more robust copy protection.
“The content protection system of HD DVD provides an equivalent level of security as the system advocated by Fox for Blu-ray. We also believe the Blu-ray disc format and proposed copy protection system may result in playability and reliability issues for the consumer.
“HD DVD provides robust, renewable and standardized content protection coupled with proven reliability, cost effectiveness and flexibility which is why many major film studios have announced support for the HD DVD format.”

“WITH MICROSOFT and Toshiba having jumped into bed together it has come as no great surprise that Bill Gates announced that the Xbox 360 is to incorporate HD-DVD, one of two formats vying for the position of the successor to DVD. This will heat up the war for the succession of the throne as Sony have sided with the other contender, Blu-ray, and so if one format loses the war in no doubt magnanimous fashion then it could spell trouble for the console that has sided with it. Of course the same is true vice versa, and so both companies are taking calculated risks in making their decisions.
Microsoft’s choice to go with HD-DVD has come a little late in the game for the Xbox 360 though, and so they plan to include “old fashioned” DVD drives on the first batches of 360’s when the console launches for Christmas.
How Microsoft plans on handling upgrading everyone to HD-DVD afterwards we can’t wait to hear about.”
